Walking on Cloud 9 with our New Floors

After more than two years of planning and hard work, we finally have a functional space to call our bedroom. When we bought our house, we envisioned transforming what used to be two separate rooms into a large primary suite, complete with an en-suite bathroom and walk-in closet. Now, as we finish the final touches, we’re thrilled to see that dream become a reality.

New flooring is one of the most effective ways to make a room feel complete. It connects spaces and ties them together, making it a decision not to be taken lightly—it’s not something easily changed. Paint can make a significant impact, but paint is fleeting and serves as a complement. Your floors, however, provide the foundation for the room’s design.

I’ve been waiting for the day I could walk barefoot down the hallway into my bedroom, glance out the windows, and enjoy the warmth of our new fireplace. It’s a relief to have such a major item checked off the list. Now, we can move forward, buy furniture, and roll out area rugs.

Choosing the Right Flooring

Choosing our floors was an important decision, and Flooret made the process easy by offering a variety of sample kits. I ordered several of their best-selling luxury vinyl plank (LVP) options, knowing I wanted something durable, aesthetically pleasing, and easy to install. We also grabbed a few samples from our local hardware store for comparison.

We tested them rigorously (involving some very “sophisticated” methods, like hammers and chisels). Flooret’s Modin line, with its 40 mil wear layer, came out on top—it was practically impenetrable.

Ultimately, we selected the Nakan color from the Modin Signature collection (9″ wide, 72″ long). The warm yet subtle, medium-tone color matched our upstairs flooring and had the perfect natural neutral look we wanted.

Planning Your Layout

If you have a hallway like we do, it’s best to use it as the starting point for your pattern. Always run your flooring parallel to the long edge of the hallway. The goal is to have the planks aligned symmetrically on both sides—no one wants a full piece on one side and a sliver on the other.

To ensure symmetry, you can either center a full plank in the middle of the hallway or use the seam between two planks to mark the center. Mock up a few pieces to see which option looks best.

Marking your guide line

Once you’ve planned the layout, mark a reference line for your starting plank. You can do this by drawing directly on the subfloor or using a taut string line. This guide will help prevent the pattern from shifting as you tap the floors into place. After marking, work backward to determine how much of the first plank will need to be cut along the starting wall.

Cutting and Laying the Flooring

Start with the female end of the plank facing the wall and build out from there. From your guideline, either measure or mock up boards to calculate how much needs to be cut from the first plank. For example, if the wall is 77″ from your guide line and the planks are 9″ wide, you’ll need 8 full-size planks plus one 5″ piece.

Always leave a 1/4″ gap between the edge of the floor and the wall to allow for expansion. This will be covered by baseboards or quarter round later.

Flooret’s click-and-lock system makes the process simple and ensures a snug fit. We used a flooring installation kit that included a rubber mallet, tapping block, pry bar, and spacers. With these tools, we tapped each piece securely into place.

Lay the Floor down

Flooret’s click and lock system provides a nice snug fit that is easy to accomplish. We picked up a flooring install kit that included a rubber mallet, tapping block, pry bar, and spacers. Click the flooring in place and use the tapping block and mallet to tap each piece together.

Installing Baseboards or Trim

For a finishing touch, we installed shingle trim to cover the edges of our flooring. We made sure to match the original trim as closely as possible to blend the new floors seamlessly with the historic aesthetic of our home. While it was an extra expense, the result was worth it—it brings everything together beautifully.
